The ID. Buzz from Volkswagen inspires with its emission-free electric drive and the emotional connection to travelling and adventures with the ‘Bulli’. In February 2023, 14 trainees from Volkswagen Group Retail Deutschland and Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge launched a trainees project to increase the sustainability of the ID. Buzz even further.

The focus of the reconstruction works was to further increase sustainability and range. The trainees therefore optimised the aerodynamics, used sustainable raw materials and natural materials, thereby significantly improving the eco-balance of the electric vehicle. The ID. Buzz Green shows what an even more sustainable ‘Bulli’ could look like and celebrated its premiere on the island of Sylt on 18 May 2024. Find out all the details here in this press release.

ID. Buzz Green with Organoid® Natural Surfaces

Roof liner

The trainees have redesigned the headliner of the ID. Buzz and used a sustainable Organoid® natural surface on natural flax fleece. The innovative and allergy-friendly material is made from fragrant hay, grasses, herbs and marguerite flowers in Tyrol/Austria in a climate-neutral process.

In this special production, the hay is scattered more densely in the centre and more loosely at the edges, creating a special visual gradient. The individually hand-applied marguerites are a real eye-catcher. The models for this customised design are the natural surfaces WILDSPITZE light and ALMWIESE light from the collection.

With the help of upholsterer Susann Jäger from Hanover, the standard headlining was removed and reupholstered with virgin wool fabric. The headlining was also illuminated: Almost 1,000 lights shimmer at night and make the Organoid® natural surface blossom and glow.

Insulating Material

The trainees replaced the standard insulation material of the ID. Buzz with sustainable alternatives. In the rear of the vehicle, the Organoid® natural surface ALMWIESE was used – a decor made from Tyrolean Alpine hay with colourful petals of marguerites, roses, cornflowers, heather, lavender and sunflowers. The bitumen panels in the doors were replaced with aeroplane plywood, and insulation made from recycled cotton T-shirts was used under the floor. The delicate scent of natural hay and flowers also improves the indoor climate and ensures pleasant moments of well-being in the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Green.

“With the ID. Buzz Green, the trainees at VGRD and Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge have created an outstanding and very sustainable vehicle through intensive teamwork using a wide variety of natural materials.”

Sustainability meets innovation

The ID. Buzz Green impresses with self-designed features such as a wooden floor, sustainable tyres and a new dashboard. The interior is made from 63 old PET bottles, while the underbody paneling and wheel arch liners are made from recycled plastics. The vehicle’s SolarCafé, powered by a solar roof, supports the battery, which increases the range by up to 1,560 kilometres per year. The rims made of ash wood and the wooden e-bikes from ‘My Esel’ in Austria are also sustainable. Other innovative features such as the customised tailgate made of ash wood round off the environmentally friendly concept.

Premiere of the ID. Buzz Green on Sylt

The successful kick-off of the project was followed by several months of intensive teamwork by trainees from Volkswagen Group Retail Deutschland (VGRD GmbH) and Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge. In the process, a Volkswagen ID. Buzz was completely dismantled and rebuilt from scratch.

The result, the ID. Buzz Green, celebrates its premiere during the exclusive California Summer Opening Event of the 2024 surfing season on the North Sea island of Sylt. The numerous visitors and press representatives were impressed by the sustainable and contemporary vehicle project and were particularly interested in the large number of natural and recycled materials used.
