Facts & FAQ

  • 1.1 WHAT ARE ORGANOID® NATURAL SURFACES?

The short answer: They are a piece of nature.

The long answer: Our unique natural surfaces are made from raw materials that are rapidly renewable and natural rest materials from upcycling projects. They bring nature in: everything from alpine hay to stone pine is included. Flowers, leaves, hay and more are gently processed with a lot of manual labour and pressed onto various backing materials. The look, feel and scent are largely retained and enable a true natural experience in the interior. Our innovative carrier materials allow a wide range of applications – so the ALMWIESE fits just as well on the wall as on the ceiling, on glass surfaces or even on furniture fronts. There are no limits to creativity.

  • 1.2 HOW SUSTAINABLE IS ORGANOID® PRODUCTION?

We admit it: We’re a little eco-obsessed. At least when it comes to the company and our products.

In our factory in the Tyrolean Alps, we value ecological and climate-neutral production. This starts with the 100 % green electricity that flows into our production and ends with the materials used. We work with natural, rapidly renewable raw materials or natural residues from upcycling projects. We also value the shortest possible transport routes and want to offer regional added value with our company.

  • 1.3 DO THE NATURAL SURFACES GIVE OFF A SCENT?

Depending on the material: Oh yes!

Our natural surfaces bring nature in – not just visually, but also through touch and scent. The raw materials are processed so carefully that their natural scent is retained. For example, with the ROSENBLÜTEN surface you feel as if you are walking through a rose garden. The scent of BERGWIESE transports you to a summery alpine pasture, while LAVENDEL evokes holiday feelings in Provence. The intensity of the scent depends heavily on the temperature, humidity and air exchange rate as well as personal perception. Over time, this scent intensity decreases, as with any raw material. Raw materials such as skeletal leaves or cornflower petals do not have a strong scent of their own, which is why you cannot find this on the surface. But they’re still nice to look at.

  • 1.4 ARE ORGANOID® NATURAL SURFACES SUITED FOR ALLERGY SUFFERERS?

Watch out: sneeze-free enjoyment! With our natural surfaces, the hay meadow can be experienced indoors every day – without tissues.

We tested the natural raw materials that are allergen carriers when fresh (such as hay, moss and birch leaves) for their allergenic effects when processed. No allergy-causing emissions were detected in the end-product. You can find the test results in the download area.

  • 1.5 WHAT IS THE GENERAL SERVICE-LIFE OF NATURAL SURFACES?

For us, “grandchild-friendly” doesn’t just apply to the company. We always strive to develop long-lasting and sustainable products. Under normal indoor climatic conditions, the service life of our products is almost unlimited, comparable to conventional chipboard. Natural surfaces that contain the green plant pigment chlorophyll are subject to natural aging processes. Here, the colour of the natural fibres can change over time.

3 Certifications

  • 3.1 HOW IS THE QUALITY ENSURED?

Quality beats quantity. Although we can roll out nature and produce large quantities, we are still very meticulous about the quality of our natural surfaces. There are multi-stage quality controls in our Tyrolean factory – starting with the selection of raw materials and ending with shipping.

Like other materials made from natural fibres, our natural surfaces also breathe. This means that they swell and shrink slightly as the humidity in the room changes – to varying degrees, depending on the sourced material. This biochemical process can cause individual parts to detach from the surface. This is not a loss of quality, but a sign of the naturalness of the surface. Thanks to the multi-layered structure, bald spots can be ruled out in the long term.

Natural surfaces from Organoid® are made of natural plant fibres, which is why individual products of the same type may differ slightly in colour, smell or fibre quality. We do our best to keep the variations as low as possible, by carefully controlling each of our raw materials.

  • 3.2 ARE ORGANOID® PRODUCTS FOOD SAFE?

You might not want to lick the natural surfaces. They look great, but they’re not particularly tasty. Have we tried this ourselves? That will remain our secret…

Our natural surfaces are made exclusively from harmless materials and do not contain any toxic substances. Various binding formulas are used that are suitable according to the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR XIV Part A) as per the EU Regulation 1935/2004. Contact with food does not pose a problem, if the temperature does not exceed 90 °C.

  • 3.3 WHICH FIRE PROTECTION CLASS DO THE NATURAL SURFACES ACHIEVE?

Attention fire-lovers – we have of course also tested our surfaces for their fire behaviour.

Due to the numerous possible combinations of different fibre and carrier materials, we cannot make any general statements about the fire behaviour of the products. We classify our products depending on the product group using normative reference tests. Our products in classic wall construction usually achieve the fire classes according to EN ISO 13501-1:

    Organoid® light-products on flax and eco-fleece: B-s1, d0 (flame retardant)

    • Organoid® products on flax-fleece: C-s1, d0 (flame retardant)

The laminate panels (HPL) used as carrier material are classified as flame-retardant by default and are also classified as flame-retardant, even after they have been fully coated (e.g. with hay) (class: B-s1, d0 according to EN ISO 13501-1).

The certification reports are available in the download area. Further certifications for the fire behaviour of our products are currently in progress.

4 Technical Information

  • 4.1 HOW DO I CLEAN ORGANOID® NATURAL SURFACES?

We’ll ask you: How do you clean your wallpaper? If you say, „Hm… I don’t“, then there’s your answer.

If you have more elevated hygiene requirements, you can easily remove light dirt and dust from the surfaces: simply wipe carefully with a damp, lint-free cloth. Coarse brushes, aggressive cleaning aids and chemicals should be avoided.

  • 4.2 HOW DO I STORE THE NATURAL SURFACES?

If you can’t process the product right away and enjoy the view, you of course have the option of storing it.

All products should be stored in dry, closed, and normal temperature rooms (approx. 20 °C, 45-65 % relative humidity) as well as protected from light. For sheet goods or individual decks, it is recommended that the products be positioned horizontally. Roll goods, on the other hand, should ideally be stored in a hanging storage system to avoid pressure points on the lying/standing surfaces.

Since we primarily work with untreated natural raw materials, stored products can in rare cases become home to insects and/or rodents. To prevent this, special attention must be paid to a storage environment that is protected from light and dust, ideally with circulating rear ventilation.

Although outer packaging in a closed plastic film protects against external influences and preserves the fragrance properties, it also increases the risk of mould infestation, which can occur with high humidity, insufficient ventilation and fluctuating temperatures.

  • 4.3 HOW DO I PROCESS ORGANOID® NATURAL SURFACES?

Have a look at our processing instructions.

  • 4.4 HOW CAN THE NATURAL SURFACES BECOME MORE DURABLE?

What exactly are you planning to do? Use it as a gym mat? We’ll need to have a little talk then…

To obtain increased moisture or abrasion protection, the natural surfaces can usually be painted, oiled, waxed, impregnated or even used under glass. However, some raw materials contain natural oils or fats that make painting difficult or impossible. Just pay attention to the product-related information that can be found under each product.

  • 4.5 ARE THE NATURAL SURFACES SUITABLE FOR WET OR SPRAY AREAS?

For us it’s “just pure nature, please!”

The Organoid® natural surfaces leave our production completely untreated. Without further sealing, they are therefore only suitable for indoor use and should be kept away from moisture or wet areas. At least “for now”. Every day we work on innovative ways to further develop our natural surfaces so that they are suitable for a wide range of areas.

Our surfaces can be sealed with conventional oils and varnishes to meet particularly high requirements for abrasion, water, scratch resistance or lightfastness. Other possible applications include glass or epoxy resin. We have tested one type of sealing for you and explain this in a blog post.

  • 4.6 CAN ORGANOID® PRODUCTS BE CUT?

You would like to shape our surfaces yourself? No problem! The natural surfaces can be cut with scissors, cutters, plotters, lasers, punching machines and cutting devices.

More about lasers: The processing of natural surfaces was successfully tested with Euro laser devices and classified as “very suitable”. Laser cutting made it possible to achieve an even and precise cut. Lens height and suction settings depend on the exact material and speed requirements.

Before production, it is recommended to check the cutting system and test the conditions to find the optimal settings for the respective purpose. The conditions must be adjusted accordingly, depending on the natural material and carrier or backing material.

Because we use 100 % natural materials, using lasers can lead to material discoloration on the cut edges. When specifying the quantity, consider the double seam cut of 2 cm and the edge tolerance of +/- 5 mm per side.

We do not make cuts in our house. However, we can work with external partners and look forward to your inquiry.

  • 4.7 CAN I PRINT SOMETHING ON ORGANOID® PRODUCTS?

Put your own stamp on it: Organoid® natural surfaces can be printed on the front and back. We recommend screen printing and digital printing, both of which have been tested successfully. Due to the 100 % natural materials, the readability and print quality varies. We recommend checking the printing system in conjunction with the natural materials in advance and testing the conditions to find the optimal settings for the respective purpose. Coarse natural fibres can damage the print head and affect the quality of the print image. Please make sure to use sustainable ink and avoid ink with harmful substances.

We do not make prints in our house. However, we can work with external partners and look forward to your inquiry.

  • 4.8 HOW DO I DISPOSE OF ORGANOID® PRODUCTS?

The surfaces may be a true piece of nature, but you still shouldn’t dispose of them in the forest.

Proper disposal depends on the carrier material and any additional substances applied such as glue, adhesive or surface sealant. If you are not sure, please ask your local waste disposal company.

As a rule, however, it can be easily disposed of in household waste, as is the case with wood-based materials. The Organoid® products on flax fleece can also be industrially composted (if they do not have any coarse paste residue).
